Riversleigh World Heritage

Riversleigh, part of the Australian Fossil Mammal Sites, proudly holds a UNESCO World Heritage listing, recognised for its outstanding contribution to our understanding of Earth’s natural history. This remarkable site preserves ancient ecosystems, offering a window into life on the continent over the past 25 million years.

Shaped by dramatic geological changes, the Riversleigh landscape reveals a story of evolution through the Miocene, Oligocene, and other epochs. The fossils uncovered here provide vital insights into Australia’s unique wildlife and its adaptation to shifting climates and environments.

In addition to its natural significance, Riversleigh holds profound cultural importance, reflecting the deep connections between the ancient landscapes and the stories of the region.
