Boodjamulla National Park (Aboriginal Land) experienced widespread flooding in March 2023 resulting in a temporary closure of Lawn Hill Gorge due to extensive damage.
Informed by the site assessment, engineers reports, geotechnical assessments and ecological impacts report, the Boodjamulla Cooperative Management Council is working through a planned recovery project. And in addition, we are looking at building new opportunities that will improve the visitor experience, create awareness of Waanyi culture, and strengthen the existing partnership between Waanyi People and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
With initial re-opening planned for September 2024, the recovery of the Gorge will be a staged approach with restored and improved areas being re-opened to the public and commercial operators as soon as it’s safe and feasible to do so.

To ensure the preservation of country and culture, Waanyi People have identified important customary protocols for visitors that we encourage you to follow:
Acknowledge Waanyi traditional connection with the land.
Let the spirits smell you by putting water on you and you are no longer a stranger.
Visitors encouraged to wash hands and face before swimming – particularly after eating and handling greasy foods.
Cooking water foods (fish) and land foods (kangaroo, beef) together is discouraged.
